Gradually, evening by evening, the light lengthens, so that now, coming back from The Tardis, I no longer need my torch to light me through the obstacle course of raised beds and trailing hosepipes, not to mention the odd wheelbarrow. Tony reads me out an article in the paper this morning about how walking x hours a day is good for almost all ills; and yes, I do that, and he does more, plus his bicycle ride in the morning. The last couple of days have been warmer, though duller, so I haven’t taken my camera out with me; but having been told of a new route across the fields to Lennel, I found the edge of a wood with some great details to photography for the picture book, and another place where a beautiful tree seemed to be blossoming against a background of bare trunks and branches – though if I went closer, it might be hung with lichen. Next decent day, I shall go out with the camera and make a few records; in the meantime, I shall look up the photographs I took when staying last May at the far edge of the Middle Marches, in Liddesdale, the heart of the old Debateable Lands, as that is the setting for the story.

Yesterday walked out late, as we were in Berwick in the morning, and caught this image of the sun setting in a pretty sky over the fields between Coldstream and Cornhill on Tweed.  Last night I was wakened on and off by the wind, it uses the road between the houses as a funnel, and was crashing and heaving – even in my dreams it was banging around like billy-ho. Slates are off the roof.  The For Sale signs on nearby houses have been flattened. Went out this afternoon and the sky was just grey everywhere, it was as if the day was exhausted by the rumpus of the night.
