Amaryllis and Penguin
Amaryllis and penguin – not words that go so often together. I was given this plant for Christmas, put it in its pot, watered it, nothing happened for six weeks, then overnight there was this triffid growing several inches a day, with a multi-beaked head, and then this lovely creature, filling the February windowsill with its colour and its eight red flowers, four on each stem. A couple of leaves right at the bottom are struggling to catch up. I think the person who gave me this deserves an amaryllis card.

Very impressive! Ours is pink and white (mostly white); the color is called “peppermint.” We had one stem grow and bloom and fade in January, then a second started and is blooming now. I don’t know how fussy this one is, I only got it a couple of months ago. It is my first amaryllis, though I think we had them in the house occasionally when I was young. Wonderful to know that I might get another flowering in future years, I didn’t know that.

What a beauty! They do seem to be fussy plants; our one hadn’t flowered for a few years and then last year we had a surprise blooming!

Just happened that way, the penguin hands in my window. I have a beautiful glass panel there, with a crow, made by an artist friend, that I might arrange next to the amaryllis for another picture. I am well impressed with this flower!
