The Boat Across the Tweed

the boat

I’m in England, taking this photograph (and with an unwarranted private sign behind me, as the river path is, I have been told, a public right-of-way); and the boat is tied up in Scotland, waiting for a salmon fisherman to commandeer it.

The Boat across the Water

theboat

The boat is in Scotland, the riverside flowers are in England (which is why there is a newly erected notice just behind me saying PRIVATE, NO RIGHT OF WAY . In Scotland there is no law of trespass). Several cars went through the middle of the nearby bridge between the two countries last time there was really cold weather as apparently no-one had gritted the road. I don’t know which authority was responsible for paying for the repairs, which took several weeks. Anyway, no such problem on the sunny day when I took this photograph, just inside trespassing territory.

River Tweed

Tweed1

I was happy to wake up in early this morning and to find out that this beautiful river is still a border between two countries and not a barrier.

Coldstream Bridge: A Border Crossing

bridge1

This is the bridge between Scotland and England, a few yards from where I live. In the summer students sit on the weir or swim in the river, celebrating the end of their exams. Herons fly from bank to bank of the Tweed, the boundary river. Half a mile further along the river there are flocks of Canada geese, all mingled up with greylag geese and swans, and gulls and ducks. These are Borderlands.
