Red Admiral 2

Red Admiral

Lots of butterflies on The Net (though butterfly nets themselves have an Edwardian aura) – but all this summer I have wanted to capture on camera a red admiral with its wings outstretched. It is now the edge of autumn, pace blue skies and balmy September weather.  So on this last remaining budding buddleia, here was an obliging red admiral. October 1st today. I don’t suppose I shall see many more butterflies this year.

  1. Beautiful. I too have been chasing Red Admirals. Sometimes they flit off at the merest hint of a disturbance and sometimes you can get really close. Perhaps they are napping?

    • Thank you, Annette. They do flit off, don’t they? However, this one posed beautifully for me. For some reason, I just wanted to get a photograph of a Red Admiral before the end of the summer. They aren’t as common as they used to be, but there have been far more butterflies, and bees, around this year than for a couple of years, which is pleasing; and comforting, somehow.

  2. Great photograph. Since I started recording butterflies for our Butterfly Garden project I’ve realised how rare they have become since my childhood. Morris Minors, flared trousers and platform shoes seem to have gone the same way too.

    • Thank you so much for your comment. Yes, butterflies have become so rare, though much better this year round here in the Borders than last year, when I scarcely saw a butterfly at all. I have got a bed for wild flowers outside my studio now, and have seen quite a few butterflies there, but was pleased to get a shot of this red admiral, as they weren’t prevalent earlier in the year. Vis-a-vis platform shoes, my Mum used to teach violin in a local school and one of her pupils was off sick because “she fell off her platform shoes”.
