Harvested Field
Last year this field was set with barley, this year with wheat. Before it was harvested, round the edge of the wheat were a few stalks of barley, left over from last year’s crop. After a long hot summer the days now are cooler, with flashes of heavy rain. Almost all the fields have now been cropped, except for some of the barley. Along the edge of a barley field I came across a man gathering blackberries, he eulogised apple and blackberry pie (d’accord, monsieur). The year is on the wane. If I wasn’t out taking photographs, maybe would probably be lost in my own thoughts, instead of looking outwards at the fields of the Borders. The fireweed is beginning to fray. The skies are banked with clouds. There are red berries in the hedges. The Scottish children are back at school.

Thanks, Doron, and I wish you a great weekend also. I have been clearing out a cupboard that had descended into chaos of unsustainable proportions, and walking in the Borders countryside, when it is pouring with late summer rain. Jus finished quite a bit of work, so feel fine.

Cupboard is now cleared, much to my relief. I might post before and after pictures. It is really a lot of boxes, but the boxes were loverlain with layers of chaos, so I had to really burrow around to find anything at all…. lovely to hear from you, Doron. Hope you had a wonderful time in the Lake District.

Never surprised by the beauty of your photographs Cara – that cloud structure is quite the shot as its shadow lies over the beaten land.

Hi Debi. We’re only just in Scotland, Coldstream is on the very border (there is an old Marriage House on the bridge, as in Gretna Green). We have just had a general election quite unlike any other, where the Scots Nats won every Scottish seat except 3 – and the Conservatives won an overall majority in England when every opinion poll said otherwise. Commentators said it was the most astonishing election within memory! I am happy that you enjoy my photographs, I feel I am lucky to live in the Borders, I would not want to live anywhere else, that I know of anyway.

just looked on the map Fascinating historical sites around there! I love history, travel. I noticed your middle name being Lockhart 1 of my gr.grandmothers family was Lockhart. but from USA. I’d wondered about your election and who was going to prevail! Coldstream is a lovely area, I’ll keep looking at your photos 🙂

Yes, Debi, it is a fascinating place, the history of the Borders is drenched in conflicts of the past, and this place is so peaceful now, let’s hope it stays that way. My father’s family name is Lockhart, Scottish farmers from the West Coast going way back, the Smith was added in early 20th Century I think. There are Jardines in the family as well. My mother’s family is also Scottish (though my grandmother came from Newfoundland): Macphersons and Cambells. My grandfather was from Edinburgh, his name was Young, he was my grandmother’s second husband, her first having died in WW1, my mother was their only child. So plenty of Scots in the family. However, like everyone else, plenty of other nationalities, and the gene pool getting wider every generation. Anyway, nice to talk to another Lockhart.

Very intriguing family history you have there! Campbells have quite a history too (have some of those too) I’ve only fairly recently discovered my ‘Scots’ side, so now of course I’m very into all things Scots 🙂
